What Oriolo is.

The name.

Before Italian settled on orologio, Tuscans said oriolo — the old word for the timepiece itself, from the Latin horariolum, a diminutive of hora, “hour”. Florence still has a Via dell'Oriuolo, named after the house where the city's first mechanical clock was built in 1353.

Oriolo is also the golden oriole — a small, bright bird. The gold you see across the site is the bird's. A word that means both the watch and the bird felt right for a place that takes time seriously, but lightly.
